A core value of Music Export Memphis is centering the needs of artists in our work – and a reality of being a 501c3 nonprofit is that artists who serve on our board of directors would be excluded from benefiting from our programs. With that in mind, we’ve designed the MEM Artist Advisory Council – we’re excited to introduce our inaugural council members, who’ll serve in 2021.
Council members take part in a quarterly meetings to provide feedback to the MEM Board of Directors and MEM Executive Director on MEM programs and processes to improve them for the musicians we serve. They do not make curatorial or funding decisions and remain eligible to apply for any MEM opportunity for which they qualify.
“This is a critical step in our evolution as an organization,” says Elizabeth Cawein, MEM Executive Director. “As we build on the success of our programs and start to look for new and innovative ways to plug gaps in our music ecosystem while staying true to our export-oriented mission, we’re going to need working Memphis artists to keep us closely connected to what meaningful support looks like for them. We’re grateful to the artists in this inaugural group, all of whom have benefited from or taken part in some element of our programming, from showcasing at AmericanaFest or SXSW to receiving grant support from our COVID fund.”
